Vanarama National League Fan Preview

Vanarama National League fan preview – Barnet FC super fan, Matt Smit, talks us through it.

What are you looking forward to most when the new season kicks-off?

Exciting football combined with a winning mentality. We’ve not been able to combine the two for a long time at Barnet. Six goals against Crystal Palace helps create that belief.

The FA Cup was a highlight last season for yourselves and new boss Darren Currie. What would represent success this season?

In my 25 years supporting Barnet, the Sheffield United and Brentford games were up there as the most exciting – and I’ve seen plenty of last game escapes. Success this season has to be promotion really. Play-offs would certainly be acceptable – as long as we won them!

What bits of the club’s business has impressed you the most?

Scott Loach could probably get into most teams in the National League and maybe League Two. Mark Cousins did well in our unbeaten run and clean-sheet record, but never really won over the fans. Also, Darren Currie staying on is a very good deal too.

What will be the difference from Barnet of last season to the Barnet of now?

Attacking football with purpose. Darren was an attacking player and wants the same as a coach. Also, the positive atmosphere with the fans and the players – Darren has to take credit for that.

Who is the player everyone should keep an eye on?

Jack Taylor. Just class.

Who would be your tip for a shot at promotion or even the title?

Obvious ones are Yeovil and Notts County. Probably half the league has a genuine shot at the play-offs. It’s very competitive!

What stadium are you most looking forward to visiting over the next ten months?

The Shay. Halifax away holds good personal memories and it’s my local ground as I live in Yorkshire.

And what game would you like to win more than any other?

Always enjoy beating Torquay. It would be a nice bit of revenge for our relegation game in 2001! Boreham Wood are always good to beat with it being a bit of a derby.

What opposition player do you secretly admire?

A bit obvious here but Danny Rowe from Fylde. He just scores goals for fun. Every team needs a goal scorer.

Who could send shockwaves through the division?

The surprise team for me would be Aldershot. After their late escape, I feel they’ll have a good go this season.

Prediction time! Where will Barnet finish the season?

First, obviously.
