Match Report: Barnet 1-1 Wycombe

Barnet and Wycombe played out an entertaining 1-1 draw on a very mild Tuesday summer’s evening.

On 7 minutes, the Bees’ trialist keeper made the first of several excellent saves, denying Ewan Henderson by getting down quickly to his low shot.

But just a minute later, the Chairboys found the breakthrough – Richard Kone slotting home from a smart move which carved the Bees open, making no mistake as the ball was squared to him in the box.

Kone was soon through on goal a second time, but the Barnet keeper made another great stop to deny a certain goal.

The Bees came close themselves shortly after that, with Glover’s effort saved at point blank range by Wycombe keeper Van Sas.

And it was Glover’s long throw that led to a flick-on which dipped onto the post, somehow not finding the net.

Just before the interval, Joe Hugill made a great run and was played through on goal by Osadebe, but he couldn’t get his shot away in time, and the Wycombe defence cleared.

The Bees upped the tempo further in the second 45, pushing for that equaliser.

Mark Shelton found himself in on goal, but couldn’t get enough bend on the shot, and the keeper saved comfortably.

On the hour mark, the Bees trialist keeper was again in the spotlight, making himself big to deny the Wycombe striker – who had pounced on a loose backpass – the satisfaction of scoring.

Dean Brennan then made three subs – Browne, Smith and Adineran coming on for Hugill, Glover and Osadebe.

Dennis proved a menace after coming on – on 74 mins intercepting the ball high up the pitch, fashioning a chance for himself out of nothing, but curling his shot over the bar.

Brennan made a further three changes – High, Galvin and Hawkins on for Hartigan, Brunt and Collinge.

The equaliser finally arrived in the 76th minute, as a Bees free kick found the head of big Oll Hawkins, whose header back into the middle found Ryan Galvin who slotted the ball into the bottom left corner.

The Bees, now having the better of the possession, pushed for a winner – the closest they came was via great work from Scott High, winning the ball high up the pitch. He laid it off to Browne whose shot went agonisingly wide of the left hand post.

After four added minutes, neither side could find a decisive goal, and the game ended 1-1 at the Hive.

Next up, the Bees play their first competitive match of the season against Newport County in the Carabao Cup Preliminary Round on Tues 29th July.
