Gary Waddock: “It will be a tough encounter”

Barnet’s Assistant First Team Coach Gary Waddock spoke to barnetfc.com this morning, ahead of the Bees midweek trip to Newport County’s Rodney Parade.

Gary began by reflecting on Saturday’s defeat to Hartlepool United, saying:

“We were disappointed with the result against Hartlepool, on the back of some very good performances and results going into the game.

“It may have just been one game too many for us – we’ve had a lot of games in a short period of time.

“We’ve played a lot of the top teams, and everybody has got up for them.

“That’s no disrespect at all to Hartlepool, who played extremely well on the day.

“But it may have just been a match too many for us on Saturday.

“Purely and simply, we need to go back to doing what we did before; working extremely hard for one another and sticking together.

“We need to be solid, compact, express ourselves in the final third, and take the opportunities that come our way.

“Young Fumnaya Shomotun was a positive from Saturday’s game.

“He found it hard up at Accrington – that’s a difficult place to go and make your full debut.

“But on Saturday you could see the quality that he’s got in the first 15 minutes, with the excellent goal that he scored.

“He brings something different to the team, and it really was a fantastic goal.

“There were a few good goals on Saturday, but we were obviously pleased with Fumnaya’s one.”

Looking ahead to Tuesday night’s match against Newport, Gary said:

“It’s always a difficult game against Newport County.

“I believe the pitch isn’t in the best condition that it could be.

“Obviously they’ll be used to that, but we have to play the conditions as well.

“It will be a tough encounter, but we want to make sure that we go down there and put on a performance.

“We want to get back on form and get some points on the board again.”
