Uli Landvreugd was pleased with Barnet’s performance after they battled past Hayes & Yeading United to secure a place in the FA Trophy second round.

The Bees left it late with George Sykes scoring a late winner to deny the home side a replay following an impressive performance.

Speaking post-match Landvreugd explained that winning was all that mattered in order to progress.

“We’re just pleased to get the win. It was a typical cup tie and they gave everything. I thought we were the better team overall but they performed very well.

“With the cup you always want to win and if you can win and play good football that is even better but the important thing was to win to get into the next round.”

Landvreugd continued by praising Hayes & Yeading for adapting their style of play to counter the Bees’ passing football.

“They played in a different way than they usually do with two physically strikers, we also rested some players and Elliot Johnson was injured in the warm-up.

“Jack Saville also missed out through illness so we had to dig deep but the players battled hard and got the win.”

George Sykes got the winner in the 89th minute and Landvreugd believes the goal will give the youngster a massive boost.

“I think he needed a goal for his own personal confidence because he probably should have scored the first chance he got.

“It will give him a massive boost and he took the goal very well. He has a lot of things to improve but he is very young and to score the winning goal says a lot.”

The Bees won two out of two last week and Landvreugd believes not having to face a replay will allow the squad to regroup.

“There was a little bit of tiredness from Tuesday and a few players are not well but we have a few players coming back.

“We are of course happy we don’t have to play a replay this Tuesday because it gives us a bit of time to recover after a busy couple of weeks.
