Weston: “We showed a lot of character”

Curtis Weston admitted that he was disappointed to concede a last-gasp equaliser against AFC Telford United on Saturday, but insisted that the squad were feeling positive having gained a hard-earned point from the game at New Bucks Head.

Speaking after the game, Barnet’s stand-in captain said:

“The first half we were nowhere near as good as we have shown that we can be this season. Going in 1-0 down at half-time is always hard, but we got a lift from the gaffer and went back out there did really well.

“Obviously in the second half we stepped it up and I thought we showed a lot of character to get back into the game and get ahead. At the end we’ve just stopped concentrating for a minute and a cross into the box has cost us a goal so we are disappointed with that.

"It is not a bad point. They will get results against teams that are coming away here. We are still top of the league so we can build on that for Tuesday. We had a bit of music on in the dressing room and we were all saying that we are top of the league so we’re happy.”

The club’s vice-captain wore the armband on Saturday in the absence of Charlie MacDonald, who is currently sidelined with a knee injury, and believes that with so many leaders in the group the team spirit within the Barnet camp could be crucial as the season wears on:

“It was great to lead the side out. I’m sad for Charlie Mac at the moment because he is going to be out for a little while but I was happy to step up and be captain.

“I’ve taken the armband a couple of times already when Charlie has gone off so it is no different for me. I just go out there and play my game.

“There are a lot of captain-type figures in the team with the senior pros and even a couple of the younger boys are very mature for their age and can always be trusted to step up to the plate, maybe not in the way that they talk but in the way that they perform for the team.

“The gaffer has brought in his own style of play and he is very forceful and keeps us all together. We do a lot of things as a group so the togetherness is very strong this season.”
