Tom Champion: “It was all about the three points”

Barnet midfielder Tom Champion believes that last night’s 1-0 victory over Morecambe could be a crucial win in the race for the play-offs.
Speaking after the game, the Bees’ goalscorer said:
“I’m delighted with the win, it was all about the three points today.
“It was always going to be difficult conditions to play in and we knew that before the game.
“Our performances have been there or thereabouts recently, but we haven’t got the results.
“It’s been a bit of a sticky patch, so this evening was just about getting the win.
“In terms of my own performance, it always helps when you score a goal!
“I don’t get many so I’ll enjoy that one!
“I thought that this was a game to be safe with the ball – when Morecambe went a man down we had to be patient and believe that an opportunity would come.
“It can be frustrating playing against ten men sometimes, but luckily a chance presented itself.
“I took it and I’m delighted with that – but I’m more pleased that we’re going on the long journey back to The Hive with three points.”
“I think our work with the ball has been good in recent weeks, but we’ve lacked that cutting edge at times.
“Today we wanted to punish the opposition when we got an opportunity.
“We had three or four other chances to score, but it was all about taking the one chance and scoring more than they did.
“We were pleased with our work with the ball, but of course it does open up a few more spaces when the other team goes down to ten men.
“Ten minutes after the goal we were probably a bit naïve and invited them on to us a bit too much – we could have managed that a bit better, but overall I’m delighted.”
Describing his goal, Tom said:
“I can’t remember it exactly, it’s a bit of a blur!”
“The ball was out wide and I just made a run towards the near post.
“There wasn’t a lot of pace on the ball, so I just had to generate some power and guide it across the keeper.
“I thought the keeper was going to save it to be honest, so I was delighted to see it go in.
“Obviously it turned out to be the winner and the three points are the most important thing.”
The Bees’ goalscorer is optimistic about the rest of the season, saying:
“We certainly hope that this can kick start a play-off challenge and we needed a win big time tonight.
“This gets us back into the places that we want to be in – in and around the play-offs – and we obviously believe that we can go on a little run now.
“I think that any of the teams in the mix at the moment are capable of doing that, but we want to be the ones to take advantage.
“We’re coming to a key point in the season now, where the points really start to matter.”
