RUAIRI’S STORY

When tasked with a project at school in relation to Black History Month, seven-year-old Ruairi didn’t hesitate and straight away chose to dedicate his activity to Idris Kanu.

Ā

Ruairi’s dad decided to post his son’s work on X, with the photo getting the attention of the Bees’ number eleven, who off the back of the post, wanted to invite Ruairi to meet him and the rest of the squad at the game against Notts County on Saturday.

Ruairi loves playing football and can be found spending most of his spare time in his back garden kicking ball & scoring goals.

Ā

Barnet is his favourite football team and he loves going to the Hive to watch the team play and loves getting a picture with Mr Bumble, with Idris of course being his favourite player.

Ā

RuairĆ has William’s Syndrome, which is a rare genetic disorder affecting growth & development. It can impact many parts of the body including the heart, and because of this, he underwent life-saving open heart surgery at 9 months old. Characteristics associated with this syndrome mean RuairĆ is outgoing, has an engaging personality and he will take an interest in other people.

Ā

Ruairi greeted Idris when he arrived at the Hive for Saturday’s game, and was taken onto the pitch to have some photos, as well as being introduced to the rest of the squad in the dressing room.

Ā

Idris touched on what it means to see young Bees’ fans look up to him and said, ā€œWhen Ruairi’s dad mentioned me on X about his son’s project, I was extremely proud. I want to be a great footballer, but I also want my work to have an impact on people.

Ā

When people watch my skills and movement on the pitch, It’s a reflection of my character. I want to make people happy and it’s a great feeling to be Ruairi’s favourite player.

Ā

I’m also a father myself, so I can also feel how proud Ruairi’s dad must feel seeing his son’s artwork.ā€

Ā

Memories to last a lifetime for young Ruairi!
