Barnet’s tenure in the Football League came to an end on Saturday after eight seasons in League Two.
A 2-0 defeat at Northampton, coupled with a Wimbledon win sealed the Bees’ fate as they were relegated on goal difference with 51 points – the highest ever total for a relegated side.
Barnet had a number of chances in the match and were looking like the better side until the Cobblers went in front midway through the second half. A second goal for the home side six minutes later left the Bees with a mountain to climb and relying on Fleetwood to get something at Wimbledon.
Ultimately, a draw would have sufficed with Dagenham losing 1-0 at home to York City but the Bees’ monumental effort through the season just came up short against a Northampton side set for the play-offs.
