Match Preview: Barnet v Notts County

Barnet v Notts County

Sky Bet League Two

The Hive

Tuesday 19th April 2016

Kick Off: 19.45

Barnet: Martin Allen’s side picked up a point against Wycombe Wanderers on Saturday, putting in an impressive performance against the Chairboys. Andy Yiadom scored his sixth goal of the season in the 1-1 draw, following a well-aimed cross from Elliott Johnson. The Bees now return to The Hive, where they have their 3rd best home record in League Two. Barnet are also steadily moving up the form table – they are the 9th best side in the division over the past eight games.

You can watch Martin Allen’s pre-match interview here.

Notts County: The Magpies didn’t have the best of days on Saturday; losing 5-0 to local rivals Mansfield Town. However they had recorded back-to-back wins prior to that match – beating both Stevenage and Hartlepool 1-0. Those victories brought an end to a ten game winless run, stretching from the middle of February to the beginning of April. Notts County are 20th in the form chart (last eight matches) and have the 22nd best away record over the course of the season.

In The Dugout:  Mark Cooper was appointed Notts County manager last month, following the departures of Ricardo Moniz and Jamie Fullarton earlier this year. The former Exeter City midfielder’s first managerial position was at Tamworth, from 2004 to 2007. Cooper struggled at The Lamb Ground, but did reach the third round of the FA Cup in two consecutive seasons. His fortunes improved at Kettering Town, where he led the Poppies to the Conference North title, finished eighth in the Conference National, and took his side to the FA Cup fourth round. These achievements attracted the attention of Peterborough United, but his tenure at London Road lasted just 13 matches. Since then Cooper has managed Darlington, AFC Telford United and Swindon Town, prior to arriving at Meadow Lane in March.

Dangermen: Newcastle-born midfielder  Liam Noble has reached double figures for Notts County this season; the 24-year-old has ten goals in all competitions. Noble began his career at Sunderland, but never made a first team appearance for the North East giants. He enjoyed two separate loan spells with Carlisle United (totalling 69 appearances) before signing for them on a permanent basis in 2012. The midfielder won the Football League Trophy with the Cumbrians, but left to join Notts County at the beginning of last season. Barnet supporters will also be familiar with Magpies striker  Izale McLeod – he scored 36 goals for the Bees between 2010 and 2012. The prolific forward arrived at Meadow Lane from Crawley Town last summer, and has found the net on nine occasions so far this campaign.

Last Meeting: Barnet found themselves two goals down after just nine minutes when they played Notts County earlier this season. Mike Edwards opened the scoring in the sixth minute, before Jon Stead extended County’s lead at Meadow Lane. Alan Sheehan made it 3-0 with 17 minutes left to play, but Aaron McLean pulled one back to give the Bees some hope of a comeback. It was to no avail though – Edwards added a fourth a minute later, before Luke Gambin scored a late consolation. You can read the report from that match here.
