Martin Allen felt Barnet’s 2-0 win at Plymouth Argyle was the result of a disciplined and well-organised display, born out of hard work on the training ground.

The Bees had only won once at Home Park prior to tonight – Tony Richards’ brace sealing a 3-2 triumph in 2000 – but they ended their Devon hoodoo with an early header from Bira Dembele and a good finish by John Akinde.

Speaking afterwards, head coach Allen said: "I’m absolutely delighted with the players. They got a real thoroughly deserved victory. 

"Jamie Stephens pulled off a couple of good saves and they hit the crossbar once. Overall it was a very good disciplined, well-organised, good Barnet performance.

"The whole team defended very well – right from the front. As we’ve seen over the last couple of years, this team has to defend – everybody. So the defending was right from the front from John Akinde."

At half time the Bees introduced Ben Tomlinson in place of Harry Taylor, after the forward drove back from his Yorkshire home this morning to visit his ill father, and he helped see out the win with a tireless second-half display.

"When we had an injury at half time Tommo came on and did very well for the team, playing in that number ten role and closing down their back four and stopping any quality forward passes and stopping their attacks from the back," Allen said.

"Curtis Weston played out on the right with Mauro Vilhete where they were virtually playing two wingers and on the other side two wingers; Gambo did a brlliant job for the team.

"The players have worked very hard for a few weeks now and not had many days off. The extra work and attitude of the players has been spot on."
