LADIES LOSE TO COVENTRY

Barnet FC Ladies remain at the foot of the FA Women’s Premier League National Division after losing 0-2 against Coventry City at Underhill this afternoon.

The ball fell to Vicky Boardman, whose lob from the edge of the area beat Sue Wood in the Coventry goal but rebounded off the cross bar.  The best chance of a goal-less first half came after 26 minutes play when Sandow dispossessed Coventry defender Kim Walton with a fierce tackle 25 yards from goal. The Bees started the match the better of the two sides with Holly Sandow looking particularly dangerous in leading the front line.

Bees captain Dan Murphy burst into the Coventry box and unleashed a powerful shot, which was tipped over the bar by Wood. Although the visitors began the second half positively it was Barnet who could have taken the lead after 57 minutes.

Coventry took the lead three minutes later when Courtney Sweetman-Kirk out-stripped the home defence and her shot find the net despite Bees’ keeper Cherie Rowlands getting good contact on the ball.

Jess Trimnell was adjudged to have tripped Hannah George and Helen Dermody stepped up to confidently convert the spot kick. The visitors extended their lead from the penalty spot after 63 minutes.

The nearest they came to scoring was from Vicky Boardman’s header from substitute Chontelle Lawrence’s cross deep into injury time. Barnet fought hard to get back into the match without success,

Barnet FC Ladies are without a match next week and return to action on Sunday 11 November when Aston Villa are the visitors to Underhill for an FA Women’s Premier League National Division fixture (kick-off 2pm).
