Curtis Weston: “We could have won it”

Curtis Weston felt Barnet could have gone on to take all three points against Colchester United in EFL League Two on Saturday but the Bees had to make do with a 1-1 draw as time ran out.

The all-action midfielder ensured a point for Martin Allen’s men with a close-range finish eight minutes from time following an almighty goalmouth scramble.

Colchester took an early lead through Tarique Fosu-Henry but scarcely threatened to build on that with the hosts creating more goalscoring opportunities before finally making the breakthrough.

"I didn’t think we got started for the first 15 or 20 minutes which was disappointing," Weston said.

"We gave a sloppy goal away but for the rest of the game we dominated and probably should have come away with all three points.

"We felt the equaliser was coming and once we scored that we were looking to go on and get another one. We deserved to get a second goal and the three points."

Barnet had plenty of possession and territory but, at times, struggled to turn that superiority into clear-cut chances – something Weston acknowledged.

"The quality could have been better going forward – myself included of course," the former Leeds United midfielder said. "Our final ball could have been better but it is what it is and it’s a point gained.

"You look at where we were when I first came to the club compared to where we are now, saying we’re disappointed with a 1-1 draw against Colchester in League Two.

"If we won today we would have gone up to seventh, that’s why we’re disappointed. We’ve come a long way."

There was praise for experienced winger Jamal Campbell-Ryce who came into the action after 31 minutes and played a big part in the Bees’ improvement from there on.

"He came on and did really well," Weston enthused. "He’s off to get his man of the match award now. He was only on for 50 minutes but did really well.

"He put balls into the box and you know he will cross it; he’s a very good player.

"You would like to think John Akinde will get on the end of a few of those deliveries. They worked together before at Bristol City and hopefully they’ll re-connect now."
