A Classic Encounter: Barnet 3-2 Hartlepool United

Back in October 2016 the Pools visited The Hive London level on points with the Bees and looking to leapfrog them in the League Two table.

What followed was a scintillating encounter where the Bees staged a superb 11-minute second-half comeback to come from two goals down to snatch all three points!

It was the visitors who struck first on a chilly Autumn afternoon when Nathan Thomas’ cross turn shot found the corner. The Pools soon looked set to take the win as Padraig Amond converted to double their lead eight minutes into the second half.

But the game took a dramatic twist as John Akinde was hauled down in the area and Pools player Liam Donnely was sent off for a professional foul. Akinde converted from the spot to put the Bees back to within a solitary goal.

The equaliser only took 8 minutes to arrive as Luke Gambin’s cross turned to goal as it drifted into the top corner and into the back on the net to spark jubilation amongst the Bee Army. The tide had well and truly had turned as everyone inside The Hive urged Allen’s side forward.

But the game’s most memorable moment came ten minutes from time as Shaun Batt netted his first Bees goal to complete the comeback. Batt ghosted in to touch home and ensue wild scenes in the Bees terrace as Martin Allen’s side took all three points in a remarkable contest.
