MATCH REPORT | GATESHEAD 2-0 BARNET FC | NATIONAL LEAGUE

The Bees fell to defeat at the Gateshead International Stadium as goals from Whelan and Adom ensured the three points would be staying in the northeast.

Barnet started with an early opportunity when Ryan Glover won a corner inside 20 seconds. Anthony Hartigan’s corner was cleared away at the front post but Heed captain Regan Booty.

Despite the early pressure from the Bees, it was the hosts who took the lead. An initial first shot was well saved by Nick Hayes, but the ball was poked into the path of Callum Whelan who placed the ball into the net.

Barnet were looking for a response, but one chance went missing when Harry Chapman’s cross to Ade Oluwo met the defender, but his header was placed wide of the mark from inside the box.

On the 20th minute mark, Barnet thought to be level when Brunt’s corner found it’s way to Joe Kizzi at the back post who shot from close range, but Harry Moss pulled off a fantastic stop to tip his shot onto the post.

With five minutes to go in the first half Gateshead looked to make it two, Kain Adom received the ball down the right-hand side before cutting onto his right foot and bending an effort goalwards, he saw his shot strike the post and bounce away.

Half Time 1-0

Gateshead were raring to go again in the second half and doubled their lead when Adom’s clever footwork inside the box allowed him with space to shoot at goal before placing his effort past Hayes.

The Bees kept on pressing and nearly got one back through Ade Oluwo but his poke on the ball from inside the box wasn’t enough to trouble Moss.

Booty the Gateshead skipper went for an ambitious effort from outside the box, but his shot was parried away by Hayes.

Finley Wilkinson came millimetres away from grabbing one back but his header from inside the six-yard box forced Moss into his best save of the afternoon.

The hosts looked to wrap the game up with 15 minutes to spare but some last gasp defending from Oluwo and Kizzi denied Owen Oseni from inside the box.

Mark Shelton came close with 5 minutes to go but his header from inside the box rattled the wrong side of the netting as the ball bounced out for a goal kick.
