Barnet Football Club

John Motson

Barnet Football Club is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of football legend John “Motty” Motson OBE aged 77.

A friend of the Club and a personal friend of our Chairman, John had a deep-rooted affiliation with the Barnet FC, having started his career in the newspaper business as a reporter for for the Barnet Press back in 1963.

He attended many Barnet FC matches across the years, with his last being in November 2022 at The Hive Stadium against Torquay United.

He was always so enthusiastic about the Club and always willing to give of himself. When we made our Underhill film, John graciously contributed.

Hugely respected by so many, John was known for his encyclopaedic knowledge of the game, trademark sheepskin coats and an unmistakable voice.

Chairman of Barnet FC, Anthony Kleanthous said,

“There have been many Barnet FC Legends over the years and it is fair to say that John Motson is up there with the very best of them.

“We will miss him dearly and our deepest condolences go to his wife Anne and son Frederick.”

To mark John’s passing, we will hold a minutes’ applause before kick-off this Saturday, when we face Aldershot Town at The Hive London.

RIP Motty.
