Kevin Maher
The 45-year-old started off his playing career at Tottenham Hotspur and moved to Southend United in January 1998.
Maher went on to become a Shrimpers legend – playing over 350 times for the Essex-based side. He captained the club during successive promotions from League Two all the way up to the Championship.
Eventually leaving for League One side Gillingham FC in 2007/08 – he went on to don their shirt over 60 times.
He retired from playing in 2015 and got his first permanent job in management at the Shrimpers in October 2021.
ONE TO WATCH
Sam Dalby
Sam Dalby came through Leyton Orient’s youth system and made his debut for the club in a 3–1 win over Stevenage in the Papa John’s Trophy in 2016.
The 22-year-old striker has since spent brief spells at Leeds United, Morecambe and Watford.
Standing at 6ft 2ins, Dalby was loaned out to Stockport County and Woking last season before making the permanent move to Southend United from the Hornets last summer.
Dalby has played every league game so far this season for the Shrimpers and has scored six goals in the process.
