Martin Allen says Barnet are a work in progress still after watching his side draw 0-0 at home to Crewe Alexandra in EFL League Two, despite having by far the better chances at The Hive.

John Akinde twice went through but failed to find a way past Alex keeper Ben Garratt while Curtis Weston and Akinde both had headers cleared off the line in a second half which the Bees dominated.

The draw means Barnet are unbeaten in five League Two games ahead of Tuesday’s trip to high-flying Plymouth Argyle but Allen says there is more to come.

“We can do better,” Allen said at full time. “It is good to get a clean sheet and see young Ephron Mason-Clark come in. He’s 17 and he did very well when he came on.

“We were too slow in possession and there were too many passes in our own half which gave the opposition time to get back behind the ball and we didn’t really have a great deal of penetration – even though we did try to make some passes.

“There is a fine line between keeping the ball and trying to move the opposition and whacking it forward – as we’ve had to do recently after that game a few weeks ago.

“We are a work in progress, there is work to be done and it’s a transitional period – but that’s not an excuse.

“The players played hard, worked hard and have been great for me in the last couple of weeks. It was good to get that clean sheet because it’s been quite a while since we’ve had.

“As we all know from that special season we had together, a point is always a good point.”
