The Bees kicked off their Herts Senior Cup campaign away to Tring Athletic at the Grass Roots Stadium under the watchful eyes of Edgar Davids, hoping a 22nd Senior Cup title lay in wait for them come the end of the campaign.
A strong looking Barnet side made their intentions known in the first few minutes almost playing their non-league opponents off the park. As the game began to settle the Tring defence seemed relatively comfortable in dealing with the Bees’ threat which included a host of shots from Jamal Lowe, Iffy Allen and John Nurse who seemed well on the road to recovery.
The Bees finally broke the deadlock with Academy product Jamal Lowe netting from close range on twenty-one minutes. Barnet built on their lead just four minutes later, this time from another Academy player Iffy Allen who has recently been knocking on the First Team door; he gave them good reason to answer it as he netted yet again on thirty-two minutes.Â
On thirty-five minutes Allen was denied an early hat-trick as Tring keeper and Barnet fan Adam Robinson saved from twelve yards. First teamer Jon Nurse joined the score sheet on thirty-six minutes putting the Bees 4-0 up. The score line was to stay this way for what remained of the second half.
Barnet emerged unchanged for the second half, but it was evident that The Bees were beginning to take their foot off the gas with the second period being far more still than the first half and Tring starting to gain some attacking momentum. However, Ahmed Abdulla made it 5-0 on the hour to compound Tring’s woes.Â
With Barnet starting to wind down Reon Thomas struck a consolation for Tring on seventy-three minutes. The Bees then added another late on with Jamal Lowe getting his second and Barnet’s sixth to round up a good evening’s work for the away side.
The win means Barnet will travel to Woodson Park to take on Ryman Division One North side Ware in the Second Round. The tie is scheduled to be played on the week commencing 3rd December with full details to be announced in due course.
