The Youth team slipped to their second defeat of the season on Saturday, with a narrow 1-0 defeat away at Northampton Town.

In a game dominated by the Bees, the only goal was scored in the 2nd minute of the game.

A lofted free-kick into the area was misjudged by the Barnet goalkeeper and poked home from close range.

In response to the goal Barnet pressed for an equaliser.

A quick interchange of passes on the edge of the box between Nana Kyei and Jack Taylor released Kyei in to the box – he was tripped as he readied himself for a shot, but no penalty was given.

Further chances from Taylor and Brandon McCarthy failed to yield a goal, and the score at half-time remained at 1-0.

The second half replicated the first, with Barnet dominating possession and creating numerous chances.

McCarthy found himself one-on-one with the onrushing Northampton goalkeeper, who saved well to keep the scores level.

The final stages of the game saw Barnet throw everything at Northampton but a combination of poor final balls, missed chances and blocked shots meant that Northampton saw the game out as 1-0 victors.

Speaking after the game, Youth Team coach Dean Selvey discussed the positive feedback he gave to the team post-match:

"They have given absolutely everything today and sometimes in football you get nothing back,” he said.

“We had two clear penalty decisions go against us today and a few other refereeing decisions that could have altered the game.

"We have spoken to the boys a lot about their attitude and application and today that was excellent.

“We dominated the ball and aside from the mistake in the second minute, the goalkeeper hasn’t had to make a save in the entire game"

"While we are disappointed to lose, we played some great football through the midfield and we just needed to be more clinical in the final third.

“The worst feeling in football is when you get nothing out of a game you deserved to win, and we reminded the boys of that at the end.

“Henry Newman and I are confident that this group will step up again, and that starts with the home game on Saturday against AFC Wimbledon".
