Weston: “We have got strong characters”

Curtis Weston says that he is enjoying his hot streak in front of goal, as the vice-captain netted his fourth goal in his last six games to give the Bees a 1-0 win over Dartford on Easter Monday.

Speaking after the game, Weston – who has been wearing the armband in the absence of the injured Charlie MacDonald – reflected on his recent run of form that has seen him find the net in the Bees’ last four outings on the road against Eastleigh, Halifax, Alfreton and the Darts:

“Obviously I am enjoying it away from home at the moment and it was good to get the goal today because it is a vital three points as well.

“I do not know if there is a reason for it. I have been playing for a few games behind John but not today. It just fell for me nicely on the edge of the box and I was there at the right time.

“I played in a more advanced position a few times when I was at Gillingham and that season I scored eight goals I think, so I like it in there and enjoy it – especially playing behind big John because he wins the aerial battles and allows me to run in behind.

“I have never been a big goal-scorer but I have got nine so far so I am hoping to do double figures by the end of the season.”

Weston’s winner helped the Bees extend their current unbeaten run to six games and maintain their one-point lead at the top of the table, yet the midfielder was quick to praise the character of his teammates which has made such an achievement possible:

“I think we have had a few games throughout the season where we have not maybe got the result we quite deserved or expected but we have bounced back, and that is the main thing.

“As you saw today and on Saturday we always bounce back which I think is really important. That is what we have in our team, the togetherness to get behind each other and put together a performance like today.

“We have got strong characters in the group. We get behind each other and gee each other up for the next game and that is why we have only ever lost back-to-back games twice.

Weston finished by paying homage to the Barnet fans who made up almost half of the 1,579 crowd at Princes Park on Monday, whose support he says will be ‘vital’ for the final three games:

“The fans are also are vital for us. You saw at the end when we were walking around clapping them and thanking them for their support how loud they were.

“They have been vital throughout the season – especially the away support, we have noticed that and they have been really good.”
