MATCH REPORT | BARROW AFC 2-2 BARNET FC

The spoils were shared at the SO Legal Stadium as the Bees and the Bluebirds played out a 2-2 draw in Cumbria.

The hosts took the lead on ten minutes and were unable to double their lead while in the ascendancy throughout the first-half and found themselves down to ten men five minutes before the break.

Barnet equalised soon after the restart and deservedly took the lead shortly after that, but with their only shot on goal in the second 45, Barrow found a way back into the tie.

The Bees had the ball in Bluebirds’ box on multiple occasions before the referee blew the whistle, but were unable to find the back of the net for a winner.

Dean Brennan named an unchanged side from last week’s meeting with Notts County at the Hive, with Britt Assombalonga making the bench following his impressive debut against Cambridge United on Tuesday night in the Vertu Trophy.

Barrow took the lead after ten minutes through Josh Gordon. Connor Mahoney crossed the ball in from the right-hand side and the number 25 was there to tap the ball past Owen Evans to give the hosts the early lead.

Shortly after, Danny Collinge delivered a cross into the area, but no amber and black shirt was in the box to deal with the ball and it was punched away by Wyll Stanway.

Our number four then played a long ball up to Lee Ndlovu. The ball eventually fell to the feet of Idris Kanu out on the left-hand side, but his effort was tame and easy for Stanway to gather.

Gordon almost had his second of the afternoon, with Evans out of his goal, but Nik Tavares was there to stop the ball travelling into the back of the net.

The Bluebirds enjoyed most of the ball and had a couple of corners, but with the help of the wind, the ball kept falling into the hands of Evans.

The Bees’ best chance of the half fell just before the half an hour mark. Ryan Glover delivered the ball to Ndlovu in the area, but he couldn’t get the connection he wanted and sent the ball spinning over the bar.

A mistake in the Barnet backline saw Gordon through on goal yet again, but this time, Evans was in a position to stop the danger.

The half ended sour for the team in the ascendency, with Barrow captain MJ Williams seeing his marching orders for an off the ball challenge on Idris Kanu.

Half-time: Barrow AFC  1-0 Barnet FC

Dean Brennan made a half-time substitution for the visitors, replacing Romoney Crichlow with Kane Smith.

The Bees took advantage of having the extra man when they levelled proceedings early in the second 45.

There were plenty of amber and black shirts in the area, but the ball eventually fell to the feet of Callum Stead who struck for the equaliser.

Our number ten then almost had a second a minute later, but the linesman spotted him straying offside.

Barnet took the lead through Adam Senior less than ten minutes later. Anthony Hartigan played the ball through to Ndlovu, who held up the ball extremely well before playing the ball into the path of our number five who struck it powerfully into the roof of the net.

Senior could’ve had a second when he received the ball in the area from Kanu, but his effort frustratingly cannoned off the underside of the bar.

Stead had another chance to give the visitors the advantage on 65 minutes. Nnamdi Ofoborh’s initial effort was spilled by Stanway, but the Bluebirds’ shot-stopper made a fantastic save from point blank range to deny the forward from close-range.

Barrow then found an equaliser, with the final touch coming off the boot of Tavares, with over 20 minutes left to play.

With 15 minutes to go, a double change saw Ofoborh and Stead make way for Britt Assombalonga and Mark Shelton.

As the second-half progressed into the final stages, the Bees were still dominating the ball, but that final touch wasn’t there to poke it home to seal the three points.

Oli Hawkins came on in place of Ndlovu late on, before the fourth official showed six minutes to be added onto the 90 and one last roll of the dice saw Ben Winterburn come on in the final minutes to replace Kanu.

There were shouts for a penalty in the final minute, with Assombalonga looking to have been dragged down in the box, but referee Declan Brown wasn’t interested and blew his whistle for full-time, with the points being shared.
