Barnet: After a few difficult matches, the Bees have looked significantly better in their last two games. A 2-2 draw away at Yeovil Town was followed up last weekend with a thrilling 4-2 win against Crawley Town. Barnet are currently 19th in League Two, but that victory at The Hive has pushed them up to 4th in the home league table. The Bees are 14th in the form chart (last eight games), but will be confident of improving on recent results after the impressive performance against the Red Devils.

Martin’s View: “Since John Sheridan arrived at Newport County, they’ve been on a fantastic run of form. We saw here a few weeks ago how well they played. They were much better on the day, that’s for sure. But it’ll be a very different game on Saturday, trust me on that one.”

Newport County: The Exiles have become draw specialists in the last couple of months, drawing five of their last seven league matches. They have also beaten Luton Town 3-0 and lost 4-3 to Notts County in recent weeks. That set of results leaves Newport in 20th place – just one spot below Barnet. County are a respectable 13th in the form chart and are the 16th best team on the road this season.

In The Dugout:  John Sheridan took charge of Newport County in October this year, following the team’s poor start to the season. He arrived at Rodney Parade having taken Plymouth Argyle to the play-off semi-finals in 2014-15, and has overseen a dramatic improvement in County’s form over the last month. The former Republic of Ireland international began his managerial career at Oldham Athletic, where he lead the Latics to sixth and eighth placed finishes. Further success followed at Chesterfield – Sheridan’s team won promotion to League One and followed that up with victory in the 2012 Football League Trophy final against Swindon Town.

Dangermen: Former Sheffield United youngster  Scott Boden has struck seven times since joining the club in July. The 25-year-old marksman made over 100 appearances for Chesterfield earlier in his career – winning the League Two title in 2010-11 and the Football League Trophy the following year. Boden then scored 21 times in one season for Conference side Macclesfield, before hitting the net on 11 occasions with fellow fifth tier club Halifax Town. 

Lenell John-Lewis scored 20 goals last season for Barnet’s Conference rivals Grimsby Town, as the Mariners finished 3rd in the table. That was the most prolific campaign of the winger-cum-striker’s career – the Hammersmith-born forward had never previously reached double figures in a single season. John-Lewis moved to Newport last summer and has enjoyed a good start to life in South Wales, scoring five goals in all competitions so far this year.

Barnet supporters will also remember former Bee  Mark Byrne – the Irish midfielder made 173 appearances for the club during two loan spells and one three year stint at Underhill and The Hive. Byrne scored 19 goals for Barnet, before moving on to Newport County – he is currently the Exiles’ captain. 

Last Meeting: This is the second meeting between these two clubs in the last month. Newport travelled to Barnet on Saturday 5th December, when they beat the Bees 1-0 in an FA Cup 2nd Round match. A 59th minute Scott Boden strike won it for the visitors, in exceptionally blustery conditions at The Hive. The match was perhaps most notable for Hakeem Odoffin making his first team debut for the club. You can read the report from that game here.
