Martin Allen: “All credit to our players”

Martin Allen was pleased with his side’s disciplined performance at Broadhall Way this afternoon.
Speaking after the match, the Bees’ manager said:
“It was an important game for us – a local derby.
“We haven’t been playing that well away from home, and we had a lot of supporters here.
“I asked the players before the game to really compete and put a shift in – for themselves and for the supporters who made the journey.
“We’ve got a lot of injuries and players missing, and Stevenage didn’t have a shot.
“So it’s all credit to our players for the discipline that they showed.
“I thought that we might have nicked it with a counter attack on the break.
“But obviously with them below us in the league, you don’t need to be a rocket scientist to work out that it was an important game.
“Stevenage haven’t gained on us, and it’s another point on our total.
“It’s also another clean sheet despite having two players injured in the first half.
“It was a good all round performance, and the whole squad showed some real fighting spirit.
“Harry Taylor did well when he came on – he’s a good player so I had no issues about putting him in there.
“Sesay is a good player and he went to play right back when Gavin Hoyte hurt his knee ligaments.
“Despite losing McLean, Lisbie, Stevens, Akinde and Gash last week, I thought we gave a great account of ourselves.
“We’ll be back in on Monday and we’ll assess all our injuries then – we’ve got a two week break until we play Newport.
“We showed fighting spirit here today.
“You wouldn’t say that we played like Brazil, but I’m sure that every supporter here this afternoon would say that we played with guts and determination.
“We were well organised and stuck to our task, which is the important thing today.
“We have an important relationship with our supporters.
“I reminded the players yesterday at training that we had 1000 people coming here.
“So they were told in no uncertain terms to put on a performance to do themselves and those supporters proud.
“They’ve been doing really well apart from that Northampton game where we were smashed out of the park.
“The squad have done well and it shows the strength in depth that we’ve got.
“The new signings are good signings and we’ve got young players that are on their way up.
“It’s good for the future of club that they’re involved in our squad on days like this.”
