LADIES CLINCH CUP WIN

Stacey Sowden fired home in extra-time to give Barnet Ladies a 2-1 win over Lewes FC as they progressed to the League Cup quarter-final.
Helen King opened the scoring after 66 minutes to give the Bees the lead but Andrea Veiga levelled to force extra-time where Sowden took centre stage.
The Bees may have expected a comfortable afternoon and after three minutes it looked like being the case when Holly Sandow was denied by Beazley.
Moments later the Lewes keeper was again called into action when Sowden fired towards goal only to see her effort palmed away to safety.
Soon after the Bees were on the back foot and they almost fell behind when the dangerous Andrea Veiga fired wide after 15 minutes.
Despite this early scare the hosts responded well with Sandow and Sowden both testing Beazley who seemed determined not to be beaten.
After a dominant first-half the Bees picked up where they left off with Vicky Boardman firing over from close range before receiving the game’s first yellow card.

The Bees were finally rewarded and took the lead after 66 minutes when Beazley was unable to keep out King’s header.
The visitors responded however and with 16 minutes remaining they levelled when Veiga smashed the ball home from 25-yards.
Shots continued to rain in on Beazley’s goal as the Bees launched a full scale attack but she atoned for her earlier error with a string of superb stops.
As the game entered extra-time the Bees continued to dominate and with 96 minutes played Sowden finally beat Beazley to make it 2-1.
Sowden, who had been denied on a host of occasions, powered her way past the Lewes defence before firing home to give Beazley no chance and Barnet the win.
It could have been more for the home side but Lewes’ resilient back-line continued to work until the final whistle sounded to send the Bees deservedly through.
Their opponents will be announced in due course but next up for the ladies at home is a FA Cup tie with Yeovil Town after they take on Coventry City
