Interview | Callum Reynolds speaks after signing for Barnet FC

“I’m extremely happy! It was a crazy week or so before I was on holiday, I had a few phone calls and I’m really happy to get the deal done and I’m looking forward to playing for the club and working with John Still too.

The 28-year-old defender made it clear that the opportunity to play under John Still was one of the main factors in his decision.

“It was a very big thing for, his reputation speaks for itself. He’s won the league three times and what more can you say! He’s the most successful manager in the league, he’s experienced and he also used to be a defender which is key for me, I want to learn from him and that definitely had a big influence.

Barnet will be looking to bounce back to the EFL at the first attempt and Reynolds spoke of his strong desire to be a part of that promotion push.

“When I was looking at where to go, I was looking at going to a successful team and I want to get promoted, as simple as that. I’ve come close in the last two years, falling just short.

“I didn’t want to just join anyone for the sake of joining them, I want to get promoted and from speaking to the gaffer, that’s what he wants to do. It’s definitely the main objective, getting promotion back to the EFL for the club and it’s supporters.”

Reynolds was a major part of a promotion winning side just a few seasons back, captaining Boreham Wood to the National League and he certainly hasn’t taken that experience for granted.

“Promotion is massive, players can go through their whole career without ever getting promoted and I didn’t realise how big it was at the time until I spoke to one of the older boys who was getting emotional after the game.

“He was going into his mid-30’s, towards the end of his career and he told me he’d never been promoted before and it struck me then. To do it as captain as well, another one of the older boys said how special it is to get a promotion, let alone lift the trophy as well.

“It’s something that doesn’t come easily but it’s one of the best feelings you can get in football.”

When asked about his playing style, centre back Reynolds told BarnetFC.com that defending isn’t just the main part of his game.

“I enjoy defending, that’s my main job out there. But I also like to try and play with it as well, when the time is right to do it!

“I try to lead by example, on and off the pitch with my performance. I’m not always going to be screaming at people, that’s not really my game but I do speak on the pitch, hopefully, the fans will be able to see that I don’t only defend but I also try to start attacks as well.”
