BLOOMFIELD’s PITCH: Post Gateshead

Barnet had been enjoying the lion’s share of the first-half when the home side took the lead. It was the often seen before scenario of a team that is on top that doesn’t forge ahead and then find themselves a goal down.

Gateshead were unable to hold the lead for long as after only four minutes Keanu Marsh-Brown sped away from a crowd of defenders to steer the ball into the net.

Marsh-Brown had probably his best game yet in a Barnet shirt being a constant threat down the right hand of Barnet’s attack.

From that moment on only one side looked likely winners, but it wasn’t until two minutes from time that Jake Hyde unleashed a rocket of a shot that trail blazed its way into the net. A worthy winner.

On reflection Gateshead were there to be beaten; indicated by the resignation of their manager soon afterwards. But of course that is easier said than done and credit must go to the players for coming back from the longest trip of the season with the three points safely in the skip.

Watching the athletics from Moscow over the weekend it was noticeable how over most distances the front runner rarely wins the race as they are nearly always overtaken by the tactically more aware runner who times their run to the front to perfection.

The exceptions being in sprint races and of course Usain Bolt can re-write the rule book any time he chooses.

And so it’s nice to see the Bees tucked in nicely in second place at this embryonic stage of the season, because as the late Bill Shankly said the League season is a marathon not a sprint.
