Barnet Blog #26

Amid farcical conditions for much of the second half on Saturday it was great to see the Bees finally get the 3 points for the second time at home in January. No doubt if Barnet are going to have any chance of reaching the play-offs, they will have to win most if not all of their remaining home games. So just how crucial could Mauro Vilhete’s injury time winner be in the final reckoning?
Mauro’s performances have impressed me of late, as he has been asked to play in a variety of roles over the last few games for the good of the team. In spite of this, Vilhete has been awarded the Man of the Match award for 2 home games running now. Along with Marsh-Brown and Gambin, he gives the Bees a little bit of flair and trickery and it can make the difference at thus level, as of course can set pieces…
The winning goal against Southport came from a simple corner. I have been frustrated at times with Barnet trying clever short corners. Sometimes they come off, but often I just feel that it is better to get the ball into the box (especially in the sort of conditions we saw in the second half on Saturday) and see if we can create a chance. This can be particularly crucial in the latter stages of games when tired legs and minds can lead to a defender losing his man.
Indeed on Saturday a few minutes prior to the winning goal Barnet took a short corner and the ball was lost before it ever reached the box. So it was great to see Barnet benefiting from a routine set piece and grabbing the 3 points from a late winner (think back to late Wrexham and Lincoln equalizers denying us the same).
So after enjoying some last minute good fortune for a change and with Marsh-Brown, Hyde and Lopez all set to bolster Barnet’s attacking options going forward, there’s every chance of getting a result up at Moss Rose on Saturday… Come on you Bees!
