Barnet suffered a reality check at the weekend as they slipped to their first defeat of the Skrill Premier season at The Shay. 

I made the trip to Yorkshire hoping that the Bees would get another three points on the road as they did in Gateshead and Braintree, but Halifax are undefeated at home and they provided a sterner test than previous away days.

The Bees may well be disappointed with the 2 goals they conceded with Graham Stack being beaten from range for the first. 

It was the other side of the ground from the away fans and I didn’t see it that clearly, but after Hyde notched two long range efforts the weekend before, Edgar Davids will ask whether his defence can do more to prevent the opposition scoring further long distance strikes. 

The second goal conceded shortly after half time was from a set piece.  The Bees were not blown apart at The Shay by any means, but a couple of soft goals left them with lots to do in the remaining 40 minutes.

Make no mistake, Barnet threw everything at it.  It was all one way traffic after Halifax’s second goal and Curtis Weston unleashed an absolute blockbuster that went in off the bar to make it 2-1. 

The Bees piled on the pressure, hit the woodwork, had shots blocked, had several dangerous corners and crosses, but could not find the equaliser that their superiority so obviously deserved. 

It was a shame that the Bees had contrived to give the Shaymen a two goal start before playing like this.

The introduction of a second striker, Harry Crawford, added new impetus to the attack.  Luisma Villa, on as a substitute, was a positive creative influence whilst goalscorer Weston went into a deeper role, playing the ball out from the back. 

Will this performance tempt Davids to go with two up front for the home game against Lincoln?  Time will tell but Barnet looked a lot more effective in the latter stages.

If Barnet could put together 90 minutes of football like this, the Bees will surely be a match for anyone in the division. 

It will be a tough game against the Imps on Saturday, one of the better sides in the division, and I hope to see you at The Hive cheering on the Bees.
