Match Preview | Southend United (H)

Fixture: Barnet vs Southend United

Time: 19:45

Date: 31st October 2022

Competition: National League

Venue: The Hive

The Barnet host Southend United on Tuesday night as The Bees look to extend their unbeaten run to five games.

The Shrimpers started the season slowly with only two wins in their opening nine league games. Southend’s recent form has seen them unbeaten in their last eight league games. Three consecutive wins has seen The Shrimpers rise into the play-off positions.

A win for The Bees on Tuesday would see Barnet leapfrog Southend in the table and potentially into the play-off places if top of the league Notts County beat Bromley.

About our opposition:

Nickname: The Shrimpers

Founded: 1906

Stadium: Roots Hall

Manager: Kevin Maher

Top Scorer: Callum Powell (5)

League Position: 7th

Form: DLWWW

Recent Result: York City 0-2 Southend United

One to watch: Jake Hyde

Hyde has scored 3 goals in 8 games since returning from his opening day injury against Boreham Wood. The forward joined The Shrimpers on loan in the summer from fellow National League side, Wrexham after a season with limited game time.

Hyde is no stranger to Barnet having had two spells with the Bees in 2009/10 and between 2012/14. The striker scored 33 goals for the club across both spells in west London.

In the dugout: Kevin Maher

Kevin Maher is a Southend United legend having played 454 games for The Shrimpers between 1998 and 2008.

This is Maher’s first permanent managerial position in football. He was appointed Southend head coach in October last season after a poor start to life in the National League under Phil Brown.

He guided Southend to a comfortable mid-table finish and this season has the club sat 7th in the National League.

Our last meeting: Barnet 1-3 Southend United

Last time we faced Southend was in April earlier this year at The Hive. The Bees fell to a 3-1 defeat after early goals from Harry Cardwell and Jason Demetriou. Adam Marriott pulled one back for The Bees in the second half but the three points were secured by James Dunne deep into stoppage time.
