Preview | Brighton & Hove Albion (a) – Carabao Cup Round Two

Team News:

John Akinde (knee) and Richard Brindley (ankle) are still recovering from injuries picked up in preseason, but this game is likely to be too soon for their return. Elliott Johnson (knee) will be out for most of the season.

Brighton are likely to make wholesale changes, giving a number of fringe players the chance to gain minutes.

Last Time We Met:

The last meeting between the two sides was 9 years ago, when Brighton ran out 4-0 winners over the Bees at the Withdean Stadium. A brace from Adam Virgo as well as goals from Nicky Forster and Matt Richards saw the Seagulls progress to the next round of the League Cup.

The game wasn’t without incident however, with both sides ending up with 10 men. First, Kenny Gillet saw red for Barnet in the 70th minute before Glenn Murray was sent off in the 85th minute for a second bookable offence.

Manager:

Chris Hughton successfully guided Brighton into the Premier League last season finishing second to his former side Newcastle United after a dramatic final day.

Hughton, a full back in his playing days, represented three clubs – Tottenham Hotspur, West Ham United and Brentford as well as making 53 appearances for the Republic of Ireland.

He moved into coaching in 1993, spending 14 years at Spurs as Under 21s manager, Reserve Team manager and finally assistant manager as well as a couple of spells as caretaker manager.

A move to Newcastle as a first team coach followed in 2008. The side were relegated in 2009 and after a positive start to life in England’s second tier and being awarded the Manager of the Month award three times, the board appointed him as the permanent manager.

Hughton successfully guided the Toon back to the Premier League. Spells with Birmingham City and Norwich followed before he arrived at the Seagulls.

Dangerman:

Record signing José Izquierdo was in line to start but is yet to recieve international clearance.

It has been confirmed that Anthony Knockaert is set to feature after missing much of pre-season with an ankle injury. The Frenchman was awarded Championship Player of the Year last season, scoring 13 goals in 40 games and was a crucial part of his sides promotion to the Premier League.

Last Time Out:

Brighton lost 2-0 at Leicester City on Saturday afternoon. The Seagulls made the worst possible start after Shinji Okazaki poked home a loose ball in the opening minute of the match.

Glenn Murray had a goal ruled out for offside before the break in what was the newly promoted sides best chance of the game. Their second successive defeat in the top tier was confirmed when Harry Maguire scored in the 54th minute.

Brighton: Ryan, Bruno, Duffy, Dunk, Suttner, March, Stephens, Pröpper, Murphy, Groß (Knockaert 62′), Murray (Hemed 66′)

Unused substitutes: Bong, Hünemeier, Skalak, Mäenpää, Rosenior.
