Curtis Weston praised the character shown by his teammates as Barnet returned to winning ways with a 2-1 victory at Cheltenham Town on Boxing Day.

The all-action midfield opened the scoring in the eighth minute by ramming home a loose ball after Luke Gambin had thrashed a volley against the crossbar.

However, the Robins levelled just before half time when Danny Wright headed home Jack Munns’ free-kick.

Six minutes into the second half the Bees were back in front when John Akinde latched onto a Gambin pass and galloped on to score.

Speaking afterwards, Weston said: “After I scored they equalised and that knocked it out of us a little bit. 

“To show the character we did in the second half – to come out and apply pressure to get a goal – I thought we did really well.

“I gambled it would come out to me and pop out. I got there first and managed to get a finish so I’m happy with that.”

Cheltenham’s equaliser came a minute before the break, at the end of a half in which the Bees had created numerous opportunities to extend their advantage.

Weston felt the switch of ends make all the difference as Barnet kicked downhill after the break and clinched the second win of the Rossi Eames era.

“They put a bit of pressure on us just before half time and I thought we did well to defend it,” Weston said.

“We were downhill for the second half and it made quite a big difference so we were able to go out there and pin them in a little bit in the second half and dominate the game.”
