MATCH REPORT | BARNET FC 1-0 CAMBRIDGE UNITED

Danny Collinge’s 49th-minute strike proved to be the match winner on home soil as the Bees beat Cambridge United at The Hive.

The result sees Barnet record back-to-back victories against automatic promotion-chasing sides with six games to go.

Dean Brennan made one change to the side that successfully overcame MK Dons, and with Idris Kanu away on international duty, it allowed an opportunity for Phillip Chinedu to make his third start in amber and black.

The bench saw Bright Siaw as an addition to the substitutions; his first ever appearance in a league matchday squad for the Bees.

The Bees won the first corner of the afternoon with five minutes on the clock and Mark Shelton delivered two consecutive set-pieces from out on the left, but the Cambridge defence were on hand to head away both entries.

The opening stages of the game saw little goal-mouth action for either side, but the Bees did launch an attack when Nik Tavares sent the ball into the fold on the turn from inside his own half. It was nodded on by Romoney Crichlow and eventually fell to the feet of Danny Collinge on the edge of the area, but his effort was launched over the bar.

The clock struck 30 minutes and it was still quiet in both boxes. Mark Shelton whipped in a free-kick from out on the far left as the Bees looked for an opener, but his curling effort evaded every body in the area and headed off target, with the wind playing a big factor in the direction of the ball in the first-half for both teams.

The momentum began to swing in the U’s favour as half-time loomed, the visitors progressing the ball into the Bees’, area on multiple occasions,  but they weren’t able to find that final ball to test Cieran Slicker in between the sticks.

With zero shots on target for either side at the halfway stage, the second 45 was for the taking and would determine if either side could walk away with three points.

Half-time: Barnet FC 0-0 Cambridge United

It took only a few minutes for the deadlock to be broken following the restart and it was the Bees that took the lead. Shelton sent a corner into the near post and it fell to the feet of Collinge who neatly snook it past Eastwood to give us the advantage and his second goal in the same amount of games.

It was almost two when a mix-up in the back-line allowed Callum Stead to collect the ball and round the keeper, but he was unable to get the angle right to guide the ball into the empty net.

Another opportunity presented itself for Barnet when Adam Senior danced into the area with the ball. He looked up to see Tshimanga ready to pounce and threaded the ball through, but a U’s shirt was in the way to clear the ball away for a corner.

Dean Brennan’s side continued to look for a second and as the game ticked to 70 minutes, Nnamdi Ofoborh whipped a powerful ball into the box to try and find Tshimanga, but our number 20 was unable to get the connection and it was out for a goal-kick.

Our first change of the afternoon saw Diallang Jaiyesimi replaced fellow Leyton Orient loannee Phil Chinedu with less than 15 minutes to go.

As we entered the final ten minutes, Slicker was called into action to parry away a free-kick taken by Glenn McConnell from a tight angle; the U’s only shot on target throughout the 90.

Dean Brennan made a double change with a few minutes to go until the 90. Oli Hawkins and Joe Kizzi replaced Kabongo Tshimanga and Ryan Glover with Barnet still leading.

Four minutes were added by the fourth official and with little action, the clocked wound down to full-time and referee Martin Woods signalled the conclusion of the tie and three points for the Bees.
