BARNET FOOTBALL CLUB

Remembering Mel Stein – 1945-2022

Barnet Football Club was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Mel Stein.

Mel was a fan of the Geordies and the England Cricket Team but mostly, he was a Barnet supporter through and through.

He offered his hand of friendship in the mid-90s to support Chairman Tony Kleanthous in his battle with the Football League to save the Club. He donated his time and legal expertise without hesitation and was instrumental in ensuring the Club maintained its League status. He continued to support the Club in its time of need and beyond, serving as legal advisor to the Board for over twenty-five years. Without his invaluable contributions, we would be in a very different place today.

Mel lived locally and was frequently seen watching the Bees along with his wife Marilyn, two sons Nicky and Paul and his grandchildren. They are a big part of the Bees family, and we hope we in turn can offer them our support.

Barnet FC Chairman, Tony Kleanthous, said:

“The work that Mel did for Barnet is immeasurable – from the outset he offered his friendship to the club and remained a friend until the end. He asked for nothing and selflessly gave everything asked.

News of his illness affected me deeply and I have spent the last few weeks praying for his recovery.

Mel was one of my dearest friends, we shared a special bond, and I will deeply miss him as will everyone at the club.”

The Club will hold a minute’s applause before Saturdays match and the players will wear black arm bands in memory of his great service.

The thoughts of everyone at Barnet FC are with Mel’s family at this difficult time.
