Interview | John Still – “An ideal game at an ideal time”

“Tonight will be a good chance to give players some much needed minutes.

“There are people who haven’t been in the team and those that are coming back from injury.

“It’s an ideal game at an ideal time as we try to get people back without rushing them.

“We don’t have a reserve league and we can get friendlies but they’re not always forthcoming.”

Tonight’s game will see some faces return to competitive action after time on the sidelines.

“For the likes of Harry Taylor, who has been out a long while, Callum Reynolds, who is just coming back, Medy Elito, Dan Sparkes, Shaq Coulthirst, this game is ideal.

“We knew we would get a problem because a lot of people would be coming back at a similar time.

“At this moment, Simeon Akinola is not far away, we’re looking at the end of the month and the same goes for Andre Boucaud. Byron Harrison is now back in training.”

Ninth tier Wembley are visitors to The Hive London this evening, but Still insists there is pressure on the Bees to perform.

“There is pressure on those tonight to show where they are with their fitness and their ability.

“Some players from the beginning of the season have probably come in for a little bit of criticism because their performances weren’t as good as I’d like, not as good as they’d like and not as good as the supporters would like.

“But, having done this job for years, I’ve signed players who haven’t started great – it happens.

“I loaned Dwight Gayle out for a year because he was a mile away when we brought him in, they said he was too little and too weak, Craig Mackail-Smith is another example of this.

“I see what I see and those two went onto be terrific players.

“Tonight, two or three who were in and around at the start of the season and haven’t been of late, it’s a chance to show exactly where they are because I know they’re good players, it’s an ideal game at an ideal time.”
