You couldn’t really argue that Chesterfield deserved to win in the penultimate match at Underhill at the weekend. The game could have gone either way until their first goal in the 57th minute and despite the Bees forcing no less than 18 corners the visitors undoubtedly finished the stronger of the two teams.

Any lessons that can be learned need to be absorbed quickly with the focus shifting swiftly to the game at Torquay this Saturday.

The Bees are two points ahead of Torquay at the moment but just as such a lead can extend to an impressive sounding five points by five o’clock on Saturday evening, by the same token you can find yourself trailing the Gulls by a point. Sounds like just another must win match for the Bees!

Given the number of corners the Bees had it is surprising that Spireites’ keeper Tommy Lee didn’t have a more uncomfortable afternoon. After the match he spoke about the fact that it was about time he kept a clean sheet at Underhill after a few shaky displays against the Bees; who can forget Sam Deering’s late equaliser a season or so back when the midfielder’s cross sneaked in at the near-post to earn a point?

Last season, a brilliant late strike from Kevin Nicholson at Torquay defeated the Bees after it had seemed that Barnet had forced a hard-fought draw and a few years prior a deflected Albert Adomah strike won the points for the Bees. The portents really are that it could go either way!

Torquay – “The English Riviera” as Basil Fawlty and Reckless refer to the seaside town – is an away fixture that usually attracts a good number of travelling Bees – although probably not on the scale of the 700+ who made the trip to Kingsmeadow – but hopefully the postcards home will make happy reading.
