As we walked off the pitch at Cheshunt we bumped arms with little idea of what the next 14 weeks were to bring.
The squad has kept in constant communication with each other through social media, dropping food off for older self isolating players and phoning around just to say hello.
We followed the amazing hard work of John Byrne at One Stonegrove as they delivered 33,000 meals to those in need in our community and we promoted them across our social media. We were proud as part of the Bees in the community to donate from our team £1000 to their Just Giving Page.
When Matt Dixon (Hive Foundation manager) told us about the food bank opening inside The Hive, our guys turned up on day one with extra provisions. We then held a Zoom charity quiz night and to date have donated £350 to the foundation.
We realise as a community team it’s not all about kicking a ball and we consider ourself honoured that we are able to help in even the smallest way.
COVID-19 has, without doubt, affected the mental health of many and sadly we have seen the effects of this.
And so our graphic designer midfielder Martin Payne drew 20 player portraits and we purchased them, raising £410 for MIND Mental Health Barnet.
On a brighter note, we were invited onto the Radio Harrow sports show for a 1hr interview and hope to join them again for their Saturday show.
Some of us recently met up for a game of Footgolf in Edgware and we’re all hoping soon to be playing football back at The Hive.
Stay safe stay healthy from us all see you soon.
The Club would like to thank the Walking Football Team for the outstanding contribution they make to support the local community and The Hive Foundation. We look forward to welcoming them back to The Hive London for a kick around when it is safe to do so.
On a separate note, one of our very own Barnet Walking Football Team players Tom Moran has recently published a book all about the sport. Tom also features for the England Walking Football Team and tell us more about his new book, The Book About The Game, that is set to be released at the end of this month.
“It’s the book about one of the UK’s fastest-growing sports. Aimed at the over-50s, there are approximately 1,200 clubs and 40,000 players in the UK.
Leagues, tournaments and friendlies are played around the UK. World Cups and European championships, for both men and women, are played by teams all over from all over the world.
The book for all WF players, men and women who never thought they would get their boots on again. The book for men and women who want to give the game a try. The book for sons and daughters who may have heard about the game and would like their mum and dad to could give it a go.
A fun and interesting read, with a bit of everything.
Available to pre-order now from Amazon, Waterstones, W H Smith, Foyles, etc.
Available at all the above and all good bookshops from July 28, 2020.”
