STEAD AWARDED PLAYER OF THE MONTH FOR APRIL

Callum Stead recently picked up the Sky Bet League Two Player of the Month for April, following a fantastic month in front of goal.

Nominated alongside our number ten were Cambridge United defender James Gibbons, Grimsby Town midfielder Kieran Green and Bristol Rovers striker Ellis Harrison, but with 10 goal contributions, Stead came out on top to win the award.

Stead opened the scoring in our 5-2 win away at Fleetwood Town on Easter Monday, on the stroke of half-time after the Cod Army went down to ten men. The goal before the break gave the Bees the momentum they needed to go on and claim victory in Lancashire. That same game, Stead laid the ball into the path of Diallang Jaiyesimi for goal number five of the afternoon.

The 26-year-old then provided the assist for Mark Shelton’s superb finish at home against Barrow, threading the ball through to the midfielder who was arriving in the box, before scoring what proved to be the match-winner in the 84^th minute, heading home a delightful cross from Diallang Jaiyesimi to win Barnet the game.

Stead continued his fine form away at Meadow Lane, providing the assist for Kabongo Tshimanga’s goal in the second-half that saw the Bees overcome Notts County.

What followed against Gillingham was nothing short of remarkable. Stead opened the scoring just six minutes after kick-off against the Gills and when the visitors equalised, it wasn’t long before the forward added two goals in two minutes to seal his first-half hat-trick at The Hive. Goal four game on the stroke of 30 minutes, before he added a fifth in the second 45, breaking countless records along the way.

The Bees closed out the season and their first back in the EFL after seven years with a win over relegated Harrogate Town.

The victory sees Barnet end the season nine unbeaten.

Dean Brennan named an unchanged side for the final outing of the campaign, including the bench.

The Bees opened the scoring just five minutes after kick-off and who else but Callum Stead to find the back of the net to give Barnet an early lead. A lapse of concentration in the Harrogate defence saw Kabongo Tshimanga pick the ball up in a dangerous area, before making the decision to play it into our number ten who calmly slotted it past Mark Oxley.

Tshimanga came close to getting a goal of his own on 13 minutes. The ball was threaded through to the striker by Ryan Glover, with our number 20 striking a powerful effort first time, but Oxley was on hand for the Sulphurites to parry it away.

As we approached the half-an-hour mark at the Exercise Stadium, Bryn Morris forced Cieran Slicker into a superb save from a free-kick, but the Bees’ shot-stopper was unable to keep out the penalty that was awarded following the resulting corner when Romoney Crichlow fouled Jacob Salter in the box.

Barnet looked to respond quickly and Idris Kanu took aim inside the area, but with too many yellow shirts in the way, the ball was deflected out for a corner.

Tom Hill had the ball in dangerous position for the hosts as we edged closer to the halfway stage, but Nik Tavares was composed and was able to shield the defender away from goal and the ball was eventually gathered by Slicker.

The Bees looked for a second before the break, with a couple of corners allowing Barnet to create opportunities in the Harrogate half, but both of Anthony Hartigan’s set-pieces from the right-hand side were unable to beat the first man.

Dean Brennan made a half-time change, with Nik Tavares making way for Kane Smith after receiving a yellow card earlier on in the tie.

The hosts came out firing after the break, hitting the underside of the bar through Shawn McCoulsky five minutes after the restart, before the ball was put on a plate for Hill who’s goal-bound shot was blocked by a Bees’ shirt.

The Sulphurites came forward again, this time down the left flank with Reece Smith, but the cross delivered into the box was easily claimed bye Slicker.

Up the other end, Adam Senior rescued the ball and made the decision to play it long to Mark Shelton inside the area, whose effort was pushed away by Oxley for a Barnet corner.

The sold-out Harrogate home fans were sure their side had a second when Tobias Brenan looked to lift the ball over Slicker, but with not enough height, Senior was able to scramble to make the ball didn’t find the back of the net.

Dean Brennan made a double change with 65 minutes on the clock. Joe Kizzi and Nnamdi Ofoborh came on in place of Danny Collinge and Hartigan.

Shortly after, Diallang Jaiyesimi replaced Ryan Glover on the wing.

Chances were far and few for the Bees as the second-half continued. Smith let fly from distance after finding himself in plenty of space, but the number 23 couldn’t keep it down and it soared off target.

Moments later, the defender sent a shot from inside the area straight into the hands of Oxley.

As we entered the last ten minutes of normal time, George Thompson sent a deep ball into the danger area for Harrogate, but Slicker read it well and rose to claim.

Phil Chinedu was introduced with 82 minutes on the clock, replacing Kanu.

The 19-year-old made an instant impact from the bench, with his first touch of the ball sending the ball low and into the bottom right corner to give the Bees the lead late on.

Shelton forced the Harrogate shot-stopper to push the ball onto the roof of the net from a tight angle on the left-hand side as the Bees looked for another before the end of the game.

As we entered added time, Chinedu had to exit the action and the Bees were made to play the remainder of the game with ten men, as the defender came off worse in aerial duel.

Harrogate did everything to find a late goal, sending multiple balls into the box as the clock wound down, but Slicker was equal to every ball and the referee blew to signal the end of the game and the conclusion of the 2025/26 campaign.

The curtain soon closes on the 2025/26 campaign, but there’s one more test for the Bees to contend, as they make the trip to North Yorkshire to face relegation-threatened Harrogate Town at the Exercise Stadium.

Countless records were broken by Callum Stead last weekend when he found the back of the net on five ocassions in our final home game of the campaign against a struggling Gillingham side.

Goal number one came six minutes after kick-off and despite the Gills finding a way back in through youngster Sullivan Booth on his football league debut, Stead sealed his hat-trick in the first-half, before adding a fourth before the break.

Crichlow got in on the action before the referee called for half-time, with the defender completely unmarked and heading home another Glover delivery from a short corner.

Stead added goal number five with 70 minutes on the clock, firing from close-range after latching onto a Kane Smith corner.

The Bees frustratingly conceded late on, allowing Gareth Ainsworth’s side to grab a second, but the win had been sealed long before that with a comfortable four-goal cushion intact since the halfway stage.

Harrogate:

The Sulphurites find themselves in an extremely unfortunate position heading into the final day, with a draw/win needed and other results to go their way if they are to be members of the EFL next season.

Simon Weaver’s side occupy the first relegation spot, but on the same points as Crawley Town above them and only a point behind both Newport County and Tranmere Rovers.

The North Yorkshire club have won their last two games, leaving it late against Colchester United with left-back Jacob Slater scoring the match-winner in the 9^th minute of added time to record the first of back-to-back wins for the first time in seven months.

Out of their four shots on target the following week away at Walsall, two of those found the back of the net through Shawn McCoulsky early in the second-half at the Pallet-Track Bescot Stadium.

Goalkeeper Mark Oxley was also praised for his heroics in the game, producing some fine saves to keep out the Saddlers on their own turf.

The result in the West Midlands last weekend temporarily lifted the Sulphurites from the drop zone, but Newport County’s winner against Oldham Athletic, with 108 minutes on the clock, saw them slip back into the bottom two.

In the opposition dugout:

Simon Weaver is approaching 17 years in charge of Harrogate, after taking on an initial player-manager role in May 2009.

Previewing this weekend’s game, the 48-year-old says his footballing relationship with Dean Brennan goes back quite some time and acknowledged that the Irishman has ‘bought good football to the football club’.

He also knows his side’s concentration levels must remain high with amount of goals Barnet have scored in the later stages of the campaign.

Ones to watch:

Despite making only six starts this season, with two of them coming in the last couple of games, Mark Oxley has kept back-to-back clean sheets and played a crucial part in Harrogate’s bid to remain in the EFL.

The 35-year-old has almost 350 EFL appearances to his name across all leagues, with over a century of those coming in a Sulphurite shirt, but with James Belshaw the main man in between the sticks before his move to Notts County in January and Ipswich Town loanee Henry Gray not favoured for the final games.

Oxley has made 6 crucial saves across the last two games and will be hoping to produce more of the same in a vital game for the club’s future.

The experienced shot-stopper’s calm presence between the sticks in the dying moments have proved vital in the club’s recent wins.

Last time the sides met:

The Hive played host to a 1-1 draw back in November. Britt Assombalonga opened the scoring in the first-half, creating an opportunity out of nothing to put the Bees ahead, but that was cancelled out by Jack Muldoon in the 78^th minute.

A game where Barnet had a total of 17 shots and five on target and 43 touches in the opposition’s box compared to Harrogate’s three, the chances fell for the Bees that day but didn’t find the back of the net.

This is the first football league meeting between the two sides at the Exercise Stadium, with the only previous encounters coming in 2018 and 2019, with Barnet falling to defeat on both occasions.
